School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins
Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews

Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

Rachel Hawkins' delightful spin-off brings the same wit and charm as the New York Times best-selling Hex Hall series. Get ready for more magic, mystery and romance! (Synopsis provided by goodreads)

A few years ago, I saw a picture of a book shelf and saw a book called Hex Hall in the picture. It sounded interesting, so I googled the book wanted to read it and went to the library. I was hooked after a few pages, I waited for books 2 &3 to be released. When the series was over, it was sad, no more Sophie. Then Rachel Hawkins announced a spin off series with Sophie's cousin Izzy. I was excited and promptly pre-ordered a copy. This is book one.

I loved the spin off idea, normally spin offs don't work as well as they can, but this one was top drawer. Hawkins writes with the same humor in this series as she did with Hex Hall. Is Izzy as funny and sarcastic as Sophie? No. But she's close. Izzy, really is her own person, I'm sure some people will say they are the same, they have similar qualities yes, but they are two very different characters.

I've been in a bit of a reading funk lately, so I was elated to get my hands on this book a few days early.  Hawkins was just the thing to pull me out of a literary funk. I laughed in this book so many times and like usual, Hawkins had a few tricks up her sleeve. Hawkins has become a writer who's books I will read without even knowing what they are about, there are only a few other authors on that list.

I really liked Izzy when we first met her in SpellBound though, you do not need to read the Hex Hall series first, I would encourage you to read them at some point. Along with Izzy, we meet up with Torin again and he's his usual jerky self which is awesome. I think the new character I loved in this one the most was Dex. Girls, Dex is hot and he's super fun as well. He has a big heart and I can't wait to learn more about him.

There are a few questions I have after reading this book 3 of them for me are huge I have to know the answers! I am looking forward to the next book and hope it's not too far off. If you are looking for something fun, different and humorous, then get yourself a copy.

So say we all!
